St John the Divine is known as 'the apostle of love' - 'the beloved apostle'. He told the world in his gospel that 'God so loved that he gave his only son' for it. In his epistles he preached a message of 'life, light, and love'.
Jerome describes the elderly apostle having to be carried to church so he could preach the gospel with the words "Little children, love one another".
