Holy phone-spammer
CRE prize goes to holy phone-spammer
by Ed Beavan (Church Times)
A DEVICE that can send Bible texts to mobile phones has won an award at the annual Christian Resources Exhibition (CRE) in Surrey.
The device, the Gabriel Communicator, which has been developed by txttouch, can be used to send evangelistic text messages to unsuspecting passers-by, by means of Bluetooth technology.
It beat off competition from a Bible-inspired slimming initiative for “pew potatoes”, and non-alcoholic communion wine, in the My Church Needs One of Those (McNoot) contest.
The device was picked by a panel of four clergy judges at the exhibition, much to the delight of the managing director of txttouch, Nicholas Maguire.
“Anybody passing the Gabriel Communicator with a Bluetooth-enabled phone can receive digital tracts, cartoons, pictures, and messages; so you can communicate with thousands of people automatically without knowing their mobile-telephone numbers.
“We believe churches will recognise the potential of the Gabriel Communicator as they seek to reach the mobile generation,” Mr Maguire said.
The organisers of this year’s CRE said that there had been an eight-per-cent increase in visitors since last year: a total of 8937.
The event at Sandown Park, included appearances by the Chinese author Brother Yun; and Shane Lynch, of the band Boyzone.

I can't think of anything more likely to put off 'unsuspecting passers by' from contact with Christians, other than emptying a bucket of cold custard over their heads. How can anyone think this is a good idea?
