TOGETHER
This magazine is called 'TOGETHER' because it is the journal of two separate but linked Scarborough Anglican parishes.
This summer two separate, but linked, worlwide Anglican conferences are to meet in Jerusalem and Canterbury.
The conference planned for Jerusalem is 'GAFCON 2008' (Global Anglican Future Conference) and that for Canterbury 'LAMBETH 2008'.
The GAFCON leadership are to meet in consultation in Jordan from 17th to 22nd June before joining the main event in the Holy Land from 22nd to 29th June. Over 1000 senior leaders from 17 provinces in the Anglican Communion, representing 35 million church going Anglicans, and including 280 bishops accompanied by their wives, have registered to attend.
The Conference will be built around a pilgrimage to the roots of the Christian faith. The pilgrims will travel to Bethlehem and Galilee. They will visit traditional sites in Jerusalem - the Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Via Dolorosa, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. They will stand at the Temple Steps where, at the first Pentecost, Peter preached and people of all nations responded. This whole experience will be surrounded by bible study, prayer, and worship.
The goals of GAFCON are to:
1. Provide an opportunity for fellowship as well as to continue to experience and proclaim the transforming love of Christ.
2. Develop a renewed understanding of identity as Anglican Christians.
3. Prepare for an Anglican future in which the Gospel is uncompromised and Christ-centred mission a top priority.
This is clearly a conference that deserves our interest and our prayers.
