PRINCE CHARLES AT 60
Prince Charles is 60 this month.
Charles Philip Arthur George was born on the 14th November 1948, the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, making him heir apparent, equally and separately, to the thrones of 16 independent states, though resident in and most directly involved with the United Kingdom, the oldest realm.
Prince Charles is also heir to the position of Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
The Prayer Book Society is honoured to have the Prince of Wales as its Patron. The Society exists to promote and preserve the use of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. It is the traditional service book of the Church of England and it contains the Church's historic beliefs. Whilst the Society is not hostile to new forms of service it sees a need to protect and affirm traditional services.
Prince Charles is an active patron. At a reception at St James's Palace to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Society he said: "The book's survival is a touchstone of our ability as a society to value its spiritual roots, its liturgical continuity and its very identity as a nation of believers". He has praise "the power and majesty" of the Prayer Book and commended that it has put "the essential virtues of resilience and balance" in the English culture. He believes that if the book had not existed English would have been very different today and "deprived of words such as resurrection and crucified".
To mark the 60th birthday an exhibition celebrating the Prince's life and work is being held at Windsor Castle. The Royal Mint is issuing gold and silver and nickel commemorative coins with the Queen on one side and Prince Charles on the other. There will be two parties - Her Majesty will host one at Buckingham Palace in the Prince's honour whilst a private party will be staged at the Prince's home at Highgrove Estate in Gloucestershire. Comedy greats such as Robin Williams, John Cleese and Rowan Atkinson will be joining forces in a televised 60th Birthday Gala.
Happy Birthday Prince Charles.
Three cheers for the Prince of Wales.
Thanks be to God for a truly spiritual and committed Christian man who lives by the motto "I serve".
