Big Brother 16 contestants hoping for a luxurious start to their stay on the Channel 4reality show will be in for a shock tonight when they are told they will have to sleep on the floor.
In what will perhaps be the toughest start to any series of the reality show, the 10th run will kick off with the eight male and eight female contestants being told they are not official housemates until they have earned the title by completing a series of tasks over the next three days.
Until that happens, they will not be given the personal belongings in their suitcases and will only have access to the Big Brother compound's living room – which has no beds or creature comforts – a toilet and the garden. They will only be able to wash using an outside bath, which can only be filled with cold water using a hole-ridden bucket.
"Those entering the house could potentially spend up to 13 weeks in the Big Brother house but in true Big-Brother style they won't be allowed to get too comfortable," a Channel 4 spokeswoman said.
"Within minutes of them all arriving, Big Brother will reveal to viewers and those in the house that they are not yet official housemates and will not get access to the full Big Brother house.
"All hopeful housemates will have to individually earn their housemate status over the next three days by completing tasks set by Big Brother.
"Each task has been designed to challenge the hopefuls' fears and pride and some will require them to go head-to-head against one another in a bid to become a bona fide housemate. Hopefuls won't get access to their suitcases and will be forced to spend their first night sleeping on the living room floor."
The 16 contestants, who have been kept away from the media for the past few weeks, are billed by Channel 4 as the "most diverse group yet", coming from a number of different countries and ranging in age from 18 to 40.
They will compete for a £100,000 prize. The show, which launches tonight at 9pm on Channel 4, is due to run for 13 weeks, ending at the beginning of September. (Guardian)
Contestants
A Russian pop star, Playboy model and Oxford University graduate were amongst the oddball contestants to enter the Big Brother house tonight.
In the most culturally diverse line up yet, the 16 housemates represent countries from as far a field as Iran, Brazil and India.
But instead of hi-brow conversations about their backgrounds and different religions, much of the focus could be on a battle of the blondes as two glamour models fight for the camera's attention and air time.
Sophie Reade, 20 from Cheshire describes herself as "one of the lads" and works as a promotions girl where she shows off her 30GG breasts. She has also appeared in magazines including Playboy but says she has never told her family.
Meanwhile Karly Ashworth, 21, from Fife also aspires to be a glamour model full time and says she "knows how to work the camera".
The person in for the biggest shock on entering the house was 23-year-old Freddie George Fisher.
The entrepreneur and former Oxford University student, who lives in a stately home, says he doesn't own a TV and "doesn't have a clue" how Big Brother works.
Other contestants include Russian ex-singing star and boxer Angel McKenzie, Brazilian born bisexual Rodrigo Lopes and virgin Sree Dasari from India.

Siavash Sabbaghpour, 23, came over the Britain as a kid and thinks ugly people should not be allowed to have children.
He could clash with mum-of-two Saffia Corden, 27, from Nottingham who says she is fed up of men.
At 4ft 11", Sophia Brown is by far the shortest contestant and will be monitored closely by the Big Bro welfare team. She suffers from Lupus disease, which means her immune system can attack its own organs. She was extremely ill as a youngster but has not let it affect her life and describes herself as "fun fierce and fiesty".
As the Mirror revealed today, all the contestants will have to complete tasks to win official housemate status before Sunday, or face an early eviction.
The winner will collect £100,000 when the show ends in three months time. Check out the gallery below to see the housemates and their profiles.
