"A FLIPPING good time is promised for the whole town this Pancake Day.
For hundreds of years Shrove Tuesday has been a highlight on Scarborough’s event calendar.
To this day, many children still enjoy a free afternoon from school to take part in the skipping event on The Foreshore when they work up an appetite for homemade pancakes.
This Tuesday, the Shrovetide Festival kicks off with the traditional ringing of the Pancake Bell, outside Next in North Street, at noon. This will be followed by the eighth Town Centre Pancake Olympics organised by Scarbor-ough’s town centre management team.
The race invites competitors to be as imaginative as they want – including wearing fancy dress – as they compete in the Aberdeen Walk relay event.
Team TK Maxx has already decided it will be dressing up as a purple elephant, gorilla, dragon and pantomime horse and will be collecting for Comic Relief along the way.
The Scarborough Evening News will also be competing – reporters Laura Crothers and James Hanley are already in training to make sure they have the best chance of clinching victory.
Last year’s event was won by Boyes, who won the handmade glass Pancake Trophy which is supplied by A Touch of Glass in Eastborough.
The races will begin at around 12.10pm after the traditional ringing of the Pancake Bell and a few words from the mayor of the borough, Cllr Eileen Vickers.
The races usually last until 1pm, just in time for a short trot down to the Foreshore to join a traditional afternoon of skipping."
