- A referendum on Scotland's place in the UK is now seriously on the cards, at some stage after next spring's general election. What Salmond is announcing in Edinburgh is not a fantasy agenda. And it could have a direct relevance for every citizen, every taxpayer and every political party in the rest of the United Kingdom. Whether St Andrew's Day 2009 feels like a moment to celebrate depends on your taste in politics. The result? I, for one, feel a little queasy.
